Maserati Levante (2016 - 2024) – performance and 0-60mph

The diesel Levante is no speed demon, taking a leisurely 6.9sec to reach 62mph. The petrol V6 is more our cup of tea, with the V8-powered Trofeo our pick of the lineup

  • Sublime engine in top spec; charismatic; distinctive styling
  • Chassis feels archaic in comparison to more rounded rivals

The range-topping Levante Trofeo is totally and utterly dominated by the crackle-red piece of art under the bonnet. It doesn’t matter the drive mode, cold start or hot, the V8 always erupts into life with a theatricality that’s different to that of its German rivals – more Puccini’s second act than Munich heavy metal.

Pull away and the Levante’s light steering feels fast and accurate, so while the throttle and transmission do leave a little something to be desired in terms of initial response it’s an easy car to pilot around at low speeds – with that cultured V8 constantly bubbling away somewhere in front of you.

A generous 442lb ft of torque helps the entry-level Levante off the mark, but its performance is brisk rather than genuinely rapid, as 0-62mph time of 6.9sec confirms. This compares with 5.2sec for the most powerful petrol version, though the diesel fights back with a CO2 figure of 189g/km vs 253g/km for the Levante S 435. Opt for the Trofeo range-topper and acceleration is impressive considering its 2170kg mass, reaching 62mph from standstill in 4.1sec, 100mph in 8.7sec and going on to an unlimited 187mph.

The Levante’s lack of outright performance in ordinary form likely has something to do with its hefty 2205kg kerb weight, although Maserati’s adoption of air suspension and at least a hint of off-road ability is probably what is to blame.
