When pictures of the new M2 first surfaced, it looked awkward, a jarring clash of curved and flattened surfaces. In the metal, it’s much more alluring: squatty and purposeful, with short overhangs. Despite being BMW’s baby M car it’s actually the same width as an M4, but chopping 110mm out of the wheelbase gives it a much stockier overall look.

To cover wider tracks than a standard 2-series, the M2 gets beefed up sills and swollen arches, which integrate with blocky, aggressive bumpers at the front and rear. It’s perhaps not as conventionally attractive as the previous generation car, but there’s no denying that the G87 carries real presence and firmly distinguishes itself from lesser 2-series’. 

Filling out those arches are 19- and 20-inch front and rear tyres, measuring 275 width at the front and 285 at the rear (the same as the M3/4). A carbonfibre roof is standard, as in the M3/4, but customers can option glass sunroof for an extra £875.
