New Bugatti Chiron Super Sport Golden Era revealed
Bugatti describes its latest one-off Chiron as its ‘most challenging ever bespoke project’
Bugatti has revealed a one-off Chiron Super Sport with hand-drawn sketches on the surface of the car itself. Called the Bugatti Chiron Super Sport ‘Golden Era’, it’s been created for a Bugatti collector who wanted a car to reference both Bugatti’s history and the background to its W16 engine.
The artwork on the car’s exterior and interior references Bugattis from the days of Ettore, Jean and Roland Bugatti as well as the ’80s-era EB110 and other historical aspects of the Bugatti story, with a classic ‘Golden Era’ theme on the passenger side, and the latter-day era on the driver’s side. Forty-five sketches have been hand-drawn directly onto the car by Bugatti’s design team.
A two-year project, the work has been carried out by Bugatti’s Sur Mesure (which translates as ‘made to measure,’ or ‘tailored’) department, which works on customer requests which go beyond the already sprawling customisation options possible on a ‘normal’ Bugatti.
The two-colour paint scheme includes a special shade of gold created for the car which Bugatti calls ‘Doré,’ which fades into a metallic version of the company’s Nocturne Black. The same black paint was used by the designers for their sketches.
The drawings were carried out using similar pens the designers use for sketching on paper, using a process Bugatti describes as ‘a brand-new technique.’ The interior drawings, meanwhile, were applied with special paint and a fine brush. The sketching-onto-car process took in excess of 400 hours.
The paint finish has also undergone various tests and refinement to ensure that the sketches do not degrade over time. The company describes it as ‘perhaps the most challenging bespoke project Bugatti has ever undertaken.’
Achim Anscheidt, who was Bugatti Design Director throughout the project ahead of his retirement last month, says: ‘Extensive special commissions like this are exceedingly rare – we usually see no more than one or two creations on this scale each year,’ adding, ‘“Golden Era” is probably the most demanding piece of tailored personalisation work my team and I have ever worked on.
‘The implementation may sound quite straightforward, but achieving a perfect finish, and one that would last the test of time, took more patience and craftsmanship than you could ever imagine.’
The Bugatti Chiron Super Sport Golden Era will be handed over to its owner at Monterey Car Week later in August. The price has not been disclosed.
