BMW M235i review - not an M2, but still entertaining - Performance and 0-60 times

One of BMW's best

  • Huge amount of performance for money; brilliant dynamic package
  • Heavy, wobbly convertible is a three-star car

Performance and 0-60 times

The M235i's powerful turbocharged inline-six enables swift performance – 0-62mph takes five seconds flat with the manual gearbox and 4.8 seconds with the eight-speed automatic. Top speed is limited to 155mph, as it is throughout the BMW range.

The short ratios of the eight-speed serve to make the most of the fantastic 3.0-litre six with its single twin-scroll turbocharger. It might seem crazy having eight forward gears, but when you’re just listening to the revs and changing on instinct it feels incredibly easy to keep the engine permanently on the boil.

You’d have to be familiar with both M235i models to identify any meaningful loss of straight-line performance in the convertible – the drivetrain is excellent whichever model you choose.

With the loss of the fixed roof comes a reduction in torsional rigidity and an increase in kerb weight by some 150kg, most of which is made up of additional structural bracing. That has blunted straight-line performance slightly on paper; the Convertible requires 5.2 seconds to reach 62mph. Top speed is still 155mph.
