Audi RS7 Sportback Performance review – design

Less pure than the previous RS7, but also more muscular. With its pumped, bespoke body this is one aggressive and intimidating car to look at

Evo rating
  • Agile, very fast, and more entertaining than you might expect
  • Its mass eventually makes itself felt; RS6 is just as engaging, but more useful

As one of Audi’s performance flagships it’s not surprising to see the RS7 has gone all-out with its aesthetics. The already low and wide A7 body is yet wider here, with each arch punched out a further 40mm and those enormous wheels bedding the design down. There are some odd angles around the rear bumper specifically, which tapers up quite sharply from the rear arch, but the overall effect is certainly aggressive.

It’s the most resolved recent design from Audi, certainly, with a clever reduction in brightwork around the nose, confident dynamic openings and a coherency to the surfacing nose to tail. Its most dramatic angle is perhaps the rear, with a lightbar stretched across it and tapering aft of those pumped-up arches. An Audi hatchback it may ultimately be, but the RS7 has as much presence on the road as some supercars, and can gather just as much attention.
