July 12-13LE MANS CLASSICSJust occasionally you manage to get at the birth of an event, during those first few years before it’s ‘discovered’ and hoards of people start turning up and ruining that feeling that you’re in on a wonderful secret. The Le Mans Classic only takes place once every two years, and as it started in 2002 this will be just the fourth time the event has been held. Cars of a type that raced at Le Mans between 1923 and 1979 are allowed to compete (split up into different classes, obviously) but eligibility rules are strict to keep authenticity to a maximum. There are also parade laps (right) and a generally brilliant atmosphere of bonhomie. www.lemansclassic.com
