Galmer Arbitrage GT: Another supercar hopeful arrives
Carbon-bodied Galmer has 505bhp Chevy V8
The lure of supercar glory has attracted another contender to the market, a collaborative venture between American motorsport outfit Galmer Inc and Thai specialist composites manufacturer Cobra International Co.
Called the Galmer Arbitrage GT, the car features both a carbonfibre monocoque and carbonfibre body panels, with the promise that it will be substantially cheaper than similarly constructed rivals thanks to Cobra’s innovative production techniques and because of the low manufacturing costs in Thailand.
Although the Arbitrage has been designed and engineered using the latest computer software, Galmer is holding off even predicting performance figures until the car has been properly tested, and is even talking of proving its capabilities in a 24-hour race. The company does confess, however, that it originally intended to use an Audi 3.2-litre V6 with a pair of turbochargers to power the car, but has since decided to go with the 7-litre 505bhp V8 from the Corvette. Not only is this engine readily available, emissions compliant for the US market and comparatively simple to maintain, it has the potential to be tuned to 800bhp.
The gullwing-doored Arbitrage is scheduled to go into production by 2008 and only 350 are planned.
