McLaren SLR Roadster 722 S: McLaren SLR Roadster 722 S
Run-out Mercedes McLaren SLR Roadster gets power boost
With the Mercedes and McLaren road-car partnership drawing to a close and production of the SLR not far from being halted, it’s time for version four out of the five that are planned.
It’s the 722 S, a drop-top version of the 722 Edition coupe. Tweaked by AMG, it produces 641bhp and 605lb ft and has a top speed of 208mph. 0-62mph takes 3.7sec while 0-124mph is cleared in just 10.6sec. The 722 name comes from Stirling Moss and Denis Jenkinson’s victorious Mercedes 300SLR from the 1955 Mille Miglia, which carried the starting number 722 due to its 7:22am start time.
Like the coupe, just 150 722 S roadsters will be made, with a price tag in Europe of c£414,000. After this, there’ll be one more variant of the SLR. It’ll be a roofless speedster, and will likely command a much higher price than any of the other SLRs we’ve seen so far.
Is the 722 S worth it’s near-half million price? Or do super-talented super-coupes such as the Nissan GTR and Audi R8 render OTT cars like this pointless? Tell us... Here.
