Renault Megane Coupe

Three doors cost more than five with the new Renault hatch

Renault has announced pricing for the three-door Megane Coupe which was revealed at last month's Paris motor show. The range kicks off with the 1.6-litre petrol Expression, which costs £750 more than its equivalent five-door hatch.

The gap narrows the further you go up the range, however, with the more powerful, higher spec coupes a couple of hundred pounds more than their more practical siblings. Renault has put the price premium on the Coupe believing it to be the more desirable model, with styling that differs quite vastly from the five-door car (based on the funky ZX1, in fact) and a slightly sharpened-up drive.

In all, there are three trim levels - Expression, Dynamique and Privilege - and six engines, split evenly between petrol and diesel. The oil-burners comprise of 85 and 105bhp 1.5-litre engines and a range-topping (until Renaultsport has its way) 128bhp 1.9 dCi. Petrols range from a 108bhp 1.6 to a pair of 2-litre units, offering 138 and 178bhp.

The 1.6-litre Expression starts the range at £14,745 with prices topping out at £19,195 for the 1.9-litre diesel Privilege. All models get at least 16in alloys and you can add a rear spoiler and bodykit for £375 and £985 respectively. The order book is open now with cars delivered in late January.
