FIA approved electric production car race series will use Tesla Model S P100D

The FIA endorsed new one-make Tesla race series, the Electric Production Car Series, will get underway this year

Electric GT Holding Incorporated’s, EPCS (Electric Production Car Series), the first all-electric motorsport championship, has been signed off by the FIA ahead of the inaugural, 2018 season.

Championship entrants will run modified Tesla P100Ds that adhere to the FIA’s strict safety standards. As a result, each car will be fitted with extensive OMP safety equipment, but performance-based upgrades feature too. R53 suspension hardware and Pirelli P Zero tyres should increase grip levels and harness the aero-based gains brought by the BComp bodykit. Uprated Alcon brakes have been fitted too, to haul the Teslas – capable of producing 784bhp – down from speed on track.

The number of races, and their respective dates and locations are yet to be confirmed, but the preliminary calendar contains nine events based in Europe, including one in the UK. Each race weekend will feature two races, one in the day and the other at dusk, each about 37 miles in length. Prior to the racing, drivers will have a 20min practise session followed by an hour long qualifying session.

The championship points system mimics that of Formula 1 – there will be 25pts for first place, 18pts for second, 15pts for third and so on. Pole position will yield three additional points and the fastest laps is worth another two points. Subsequent to the racing, four drivers will have the opportunity to accrue extra points in a ‘Drift Off’ competition. Two drivers, chosen by the fans, will go up against the top two ranked drivers from the weekend’s standings for three extra points.

Electric GT Holdings Inc. CEO, Mark Gemmell said: ‘This is such an exciting day for us as we confirm that the Electric Production Car Series has been officially sanctioned by the FIA. We respect the FIA and we are honoured to have their support ahead of our inaugural season.’
