Missed out on a Ford GT? Production extends into 2020

Ford is set to extend production of the heavily anticipated Ford GT due to overwhelming demand

Supercar proprietary often hinges on being deemed special enough by manufacturers or befitting a set criteria. Meet those demands, and you’re awarded with a coveted allocation slot for a new, highly exclusive limited-production run supercar. The rest are left empty handed, presented with the sad situation of spending their thousands elsewhere.

This was no different for the soon-to-be-released 3.5-litre V6 Ford GT - until now. Those hankering for the second generation 600bhp supercar will be happy to know production will be extended by two years into 2020. Annual production numbers are expected to top 250 units.

'While we can’t build enough Ford GTs for everyone who has applied, we are going to produce additional vehicles in an effort to satisfy more of our most loyal Ford ambassadors,' says Dave Pericak, global director, Ford Performance. 'We want to keep Ford GT exclusive, but at the same time we know how vital this customer is to our brand.'

Spurring on Ford's decision to build more cars is the commitment to compete in both WEC (World Endurance Championship) and IMSA (International Motor Sports Association) series for another four years. This comes after the factory works team’s return to the Le Mans 24h, where after decades of absence they claimed top step once again with a GTE-Pro class victory.

Ford recently notified potential customers of their position in the application pipeline. The application window will reopen in early 2018, and those initially overlooked for the first batch will be receiving build slots for 2019. The final year of production will service newly selected applicants who should receive their cars from 2020 onwards.
