New Bugatti Chiron Sport revealed in Geneva - lighter, firmer, faster

Bugatti has revealed the Chiron Sport at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show with a more focused set-up and design tweaks

The Bugatti Chiron has upped its already impressive game with the new Bugatti Chiron Sport derivative making its debut at the 2018 Geneva motor show. A teaser video on the eve of the show suggested what was in store, but rather than the rumoured 300mph Super Sport derivative, what we have is a subtly enhanced version of the 16-cylinder hypercar with more of a performance focus.

The Chiron Sport gains a firmer suspension set-up that’s activated only in the car’s ‘Handling’ mode and features a revised damper control strategy. The rear differential setting has also been optimised with an all new dynamic torque vectoring function to help the Chiron better utilise its substantial 1479bhp output powering through and out of corners.

Bugatti has put the Chiron Sport on a diet too, fitting lightweight components including new wheels, carbonfibre windscreen wipers (a production car first) and a specially developed window over the engine compartment. The combined result is a dip in the standard car’s 1,996kg kerb weight of 18kg, making that diet sound about as successful as the ones most of us embark on each January.

Elsewhere, there’s a new four-pipe exhaust outlet mounted centrally at the rear of the car while the interior gets a suite of options to give the Sport a sportier look and feel from the driver’s seat. Black adonised finishes for the switchgear (including the starter button and drive mode controller) combine with ‘Chiron Sport’ stitching for the leather and Alcantara upholstery but as with all Bugattis, the final specification of the car is very much down to the buyer’s personal taste.

As you might imagine the Bugatti Chiron Sport doesn’t come cheap and the price tag for the car stands at 2.65m Euro or £2.36m. For that you get the usual Bugatti Chiron performance figures - 0-62mph in under 2.5s, 0-124mph in under 6.5s and a 261mph limited top speed.

Alpine would like us to believe that the A290 shares much of the same DNA that makes the A110 a great driver’s car. Time to put that claim to the test
