Car pictures of the week

In this week’s car pictures from issue 294, we look at the highlights from Jethro Bovingdon’s drive in the highly anticipated Maserati MC20

You might say that Maserati has lacked some buzz around its model lineup over the last few decades, constantly battling the need for reinvention after years of mediocre products. Yet in 2020, Maserati launched its exciting new MC20 supercar to bring some spark back to the brand, a new rival to sub-supercars like McLaren’s new Artura and the Audi R8 with a classic mid-engined formula. While you’ll have to grab a copy of the latest issue to read our verdict, in this week’s car pictures we explore the highlights of our drive captured by Andy Morgan.

And what a way to start things off. Our MC20 was finished in Maserati’s optional triple-layer Giallo Genio paint which despite the dreary conditions shone like a beacon against its backdrop in the hills above Modena. Designed under the stewardship of ace-designer Klaus Busse, and with aerodynamics part-developed by Italian motorsport firm Dallara, there’s no denying its visual appeal.

It looks great on paper too, with a carbonfibre tub at its core, double wishbones at each corner and Maserati’s new 3-litre twin-turbocharged Nettuno V6 mounted in the middle. Thanks in part to clever technology like an F1-style pre-chamber ignition system, the Maserati’s 621bhp and 538lb ft are enough for a quoted 2.9sec 0-62mph time and 203mph top speed.

As captured by Andy Morgan, a combination of less resistant winter rubber and slick Italian roads make the MC20 a challenging counterpart, but is it finally the driver’s Maserati we’ve been waiting for? Its £190,000 starting price puts it dangerously close to the outstanding McLaren 720S and Ferrari F8 Tributo, so it certainly doesn’t have any easy job…

Pick up your copy of issue 294 in store or online via the new evo shop to read Jethro Bovingdon’s verdict.
