The Volkswagen Scirocco, which has already impressed us, is set to become more appealing thanks to an expansion of the range.
The big news is two new engines. VW’s 1.4-litre TSI, in 158bhp format, will grab sales at the bottom of the range. It’ll hit 62mph in 8sec, almost 2sec slower than the 2-litre, but it boasts lower fuel consumption and emissions at 42.8mpg and 154g/km. It costs £18,790 and can only be had in base trim, which still packs in all the essential kit – six-CD changer, 17in alloys and ACC dampers.
There’s also a 2-litre TDI diesel, with 138bhp, a 9.3sec 0-62mph dash and very admirable figures of 55.4mpg and 134g/km with a manual gearbox. Cut 4mph and add 11g/km if you want VW’s DSG semi-auto, with prices starting at £19,515 for a manual in base trim, rising to £21,770 for a DSG-equipped top-spec GT.
